Kapari

santorini foods products

For those who don’t know what “kapariis, they are baby caper stems pickled in red wine vinegar. They are different to pickled caper buds, which is what most people know. The pickled caper bud is, surprise, the pickled bud of the caper plant. In my opinion “kapari” is not very similar in taste to pickled caper buds. I find “kapari” fleshier in texture because it consists of a caper stem and leaves, and it also isn’t as tart as pickled caper buds.

Cherry Tomatoes

Santorini is not only known for its scenic beauty but also for its one of a kind tomatoes. The trademark Santorini tomato is tiny as it is appetizing. The Santorini tomatoes are so small that most visitors to the island find it hard to believe that are indeed tomatoes and not cherry fruits. The quintessential Santorini tomatoes are unique and they grow exclusively in this part of the world.

Fava

The Fava Beansis one of the most special and traditional products of Santorini. A kind of peas with yellow colour, this product comes from the fruit Lathyrus Clymenum and it is cultivated exclusively in Santorini and Anafi, a small island next to Santorini. The volcanic soil is probably the reason why this product is cultivated only in Santorini from all Greece and it is considered as the most traditional product of the island.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

Akrotiri Lighthouse Santorini

Akrotiri Lighthouse

(Akrotiri Lighthouse)

The Akrotiri Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece and was manufactured in 1892 from the French company of Lighthouses. It stands like a sentinel towards the on the southern peninsula of Santorini island.

The lighthouse of Akrotiri is conspicuous by its square shaped tower that looms above 10 meters from the lighthouse keepers house

Initially, the lighthouse first was operated by petrol fuel and its luminosity was 23 n.m. But with the introduction of electricity in the year 1988, it has been operated electronically and reportedly emits a radiant white light at intervals of 20 seconds.

The peripheral area surrounding the lighthouse is replete with vestiges of the Minoan period which is regarded by many scholars as the high water mark of the Aegean culture and civilization.

The best time to visit the Akrotiri Lighthouse is during sunset and is one of the most beautiful on the island. The view of the red molten ball dipping into the azure blue Aegean Sea makes for a kaleidoscopic vignette. The surrounding area of the Lighthouse is replete with great traditional Greek taverns and first time visitors would do well to spend some time savoring the sea food delicacies on offer.

You could drive your rental car there, and leave it at the parking just near the lighthouse. Feel free to contact if you need more information, or if you have any questions.

Greek Protomagia 2018

Greek Protomagia Santorini

Greek Protomagia Santorini

(Greek Protomagia Santorini)

May 1st is International Labour Day and in Greece it is called ‘Protomagia’ (literally meaning the first day of May). It is an urban holiday when people traditionally go to the countryside for picnics, to fly kites and to gather wild flowers.

Practical Information About May 1st In Greece

On this day you will see many parades and other festivities throughout the country. It is a national holiday which means that everything is closed, with the exception of cafes and food venues.

Greek Protomagia & Folklore

The custom of Protomagia has its roots in ancient Greece – it is a celebration of spring, nature, and flowers. Flower wreaths, typically made from hand picked wild flowers, will be hung on the doors of many homes in a way to welcome nature and all things good.

Maios (May) the last month of Spring took its name from the Goddess Maja, a goddess who took her name from the ancient word Maia, the nurse and mother. May, according to Greek folklore, has two meanings: The good and the bad, rebirth and death. The custom celebrates the final victory of the summer against winter as the victory of the life against death go back to the ancient years and culminate at the first day of May. This day was also dedicated to the goddess of agriculture Dimitra and her daughter Persephone, who on this day emerges from the under world and comes to earth. Her coming to earth from Hades marks the blooming of nature and the birth of summer.

Some May Day History

May 1st is International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in some places. It is a celebration of laborers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labor movement, anarchists, socialists, and communists and occurs every year on the 1st of May. The date was chosen as International Workers’ Day by the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair , which occurred in Chicago on 4 May 1886.

Being a traditional European spring celebration, May Day is a national public holiday in many countries, but in only some of those countries is it celebrated specifically as “Labour Day” or “International Workers’ Day”. The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian times, with the Floralia, festival of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, held April 27 during the Roman Republic era.

No matter how religious you are, you will find a lot of pleasure in exploring Easter traditions in this magnificent place. Easter is one of the main Greek celebrations , but on Santorini the traditions are most authentical and spiritual.

Orthodox Easter occurs on the different weekend than Catholic and begins with a solemn Holy Week that ends with grotesque Good Friday and a massive celebration on Easter Sunday. Many diffent events are organized guring the Easter Week, with most beautiful traditions in Pyrgos village. There , by the end of the Holy Week every house is illuminated with dozens of candlelight and processions wander through the streets.

On Friday, everybody mourns the death of Christ and there is the Epitaph procession on literally every neighborhood in Santorini. The local churches gather the pilgrims holding candles and they all march together to show their grief. In Pyrgos, the people decorate the streets with cans and lit candles for the Epitaph to pass by. Watch this aerial video.

Then, it is time to celebrate. On Holy Saturday night, the people gather around each church till they hear the priests declaring that Christ has been brought to life and has risen in Paradise. The bells are ringing cheerfully, the locals mingle with the tourists and they all kiss and exchange wishes of happiness and prosperity. Later at night, they try out mageiritsa (the traditional soup eaten right after the fasting has ended) and they prepare for the magnificent celebrations of Holy Sunday of Easter. Below are some of top things to do in Santorini!

1.Watch the sunset from Oia & Fira

Fira and Oia

Fira is the capital of Santorini full of life. Some of the best places to watch the sunset is the Skaros Rock at Imerovigli, in front of the Orthodox Cathedral and at Firostefani.

Oia village. This village is a few km from Fira. Its sunset is very famous in the world. The beauty of this village with white houses lies in a spectacular location on a cliff, at the edge of the breathtaking Caldera. This notorious sunset attracts millions of tourists all over the world every year, but also the locals, who choose to visit Oia when the sun goes down! At one point in your life you have seen this famous sunset in postcards, or travel agencies that cite Oia in almost every top-10 list of sightseeing!

2. The volcano and hot springs

Santorini is gifted with a unique natural beauty and a wild scenery created by the volcanic eruptions. As it is ectremely famous for the beautiful caldera, the island is also known for the two small islands of black lava positioned at the centre of the basin of Santorini which are, geographically, the youngest islands in the eastern Mediterranean.

Nea Kameni is surrounded by warm dark waters which are known for their therapeutic benefits. Visitors can reach the islet with the traditional caiques that deoart from the old port of Fira and enjoy a bath in the hot springs. The healing waters of Nea Kameni consist of iron and magnanese which act against many diseases that older people usually suffer from.

3. Visit the ancient city of Akrotiri

It might seem like the island of Santorini is wall-to-wall with cliffside whitewashed villages, but south of Oia and Fira you will find a different kind of Greek settlement – the ruined city of Akrotiri. Or at least that’s what it’s called now. It was christened Akrotiri after the nearby modern town of the same name, but its real identity is just one of its mysteries. Nicknamed Santorini’s Pompeii, it’s similar in that both were buried in a volcanic eruption, there are a few big differences between them too. The first of which is their age – Pompeii was founded in 600 BC and destroyed in 79 AD, but Akrotiri makes it look young. It was home to the ancient Minoans over 4000 years before Pompeii was set up, and has been preserved just as it would have been in 1500 BC. It’s a window into the life of a distant people – and to a different side of Santorini.

4. The wineries

The volcanic soil and the special climate of Santorini give a unique taste to the local wine. The wine of Santorini was famous all over the Mediterranean basin in the ancient times and even today it is exported in many countries of the world. Vinsanto, Nychteri and Mezzo are just some of the local varieties that can be found in many restaurants on the island and in various cellars in the world.
