Jahrhundert v. Chr. \u2013 mit nur wenigen Ausnahmen \u2013 unbewohnt. Danach kamen die dorischen Siedler aus Sparta. Ihr Anf\u00fchrer war Thera, der der Insel ihren Namen gab. Die Stadt wurde am westlichen Hang des Berges Mesa Vouno erbaut und entwickelte sich zum urbanen Zentrum, das die gesamte Insel kontrollierte. Aufgrund ihrer nat\u00fcrlich befestigten Lage besa\u00df die Stadt keine Mauern und war durch eine Stra\u00dfe mit ihren zwei H\u00e4fen verbunden: Oia (heute Kamari) und Elefsina (heute Perissa). Von der fr\u00fchen Phase der Stadt sind nur wenige Spuren erhalten. Nach dem 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. entwickelte sich die Stadt unter dem Einfluss der Ptolem\u00e4er, der griechischen Herrscher des \u00e4gyptischen K\u00f6nigreichs. Sp\u00e4ter wurde sie von den R\u00f6mern besetzt. Nach dem 3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. verfiel die Stadt und wurde nach dem 9. Jahrhundert aufgegeben.
